BILL WOULD HAVE PREVENTED EMPLOYERS FROM TAKING MONEY FROM WORKERS’ PAYCHECKS, WITHOUT THEIR EXPRESS PERMISSION, FOR USE IN POLITICAL ACTIVITIES WITH WHICH THE WORKER MAY DISAGREE.

OUTCOME: BILL BECAME LAW
CRITICAL REFORM THAT EASED OUTDATED AND UNNECESSARY OCCUPATIONAL LICENSING BURDENS FACING REGISTERED NURSES BY ENTERING WEST VIRGINIA INTO A MULTI-STATE NURSE LICENSURE COMPACT.

SB 330 | RELATING TO THE WORKPLACE FREEDOM ACT

OUTCOME: GOV. JUSTICE VETOED- LEGISLATURE OVERRODE VETO- BILL BECAME LAW
BILL CLARIFIED LANGUAGE IN THE RIGHT TO WORK STATUTE.

HB 2018 | FIRST BALANCED BUDGET BILL
AFP’S POSITION: SUPPORT
OUTCOME: GOV. JUSTICE VETOED
FIRST BUDGET ADOPTED BY THE LEGISLATURE- REDUCED GOVERNMENT SPENDING AND DID NOT RAISE TAXES. BILL WAS VETOED BY GOV. JUSTICE IN A BLATANT ATTEMPT TO BULLY LAWMAKERS, THROUGH THREAT OF GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, INTO ADOPTING HIS HALF-A-BILLION DOLLAR TAX HIKE PROPOSALS, RESULTING IN A COSTLY SPECIAL SESSION.

AFP’S POSITION: SUPPORT
OUTCOME: BILL BECAME LAW
BILL ALLOWS WEST VIRGINIANS MORE HEALTHCARE CHOICES, LOWERS CONSUMER COSTS.

 

2017 SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION: May 4, 2017-June 26, 2017

SB 1013 | FINAL BALANCED BUDGET
AFP’S POSITION: SUPPORT
OUTCOME: WILL BECOME LAW WITHOUT GOV. JUSTICE’S SIGNATURE
BUDGET BILL THAT FINALLY BEGINS TO FORCE GOVERNMENT TO LIVE WITHIN ITS MEANS- DID NOT RELY ON RAISING STUGGLING CITIZENS’ TAX BURDEN TO BALANCE THE BUDGET. MARKS A MAJOR TURNING POINT IN THE STRUGGLE TO LIMIT BIG GOVERNMENT POLICIES AND PROTECT TAXPAYERS.

SB 1006 | GOV. JUSTICE’S TRANSPORTATION TAX HIKE
AFP’S POSITION: OPPOSE
OUTCOME: BILL BECAME LAW
BILL REPRESENTS ROUGHLY $140,000,000 ANNUAL TAX HIKE ON STRUGGLING WEST VIRGINIA FAMILIES. INCREASES STATE’S GAS TAX TO THE 10TH HIGHEST IN THE NATION; DRASTICALLY INCREASES DMV FEES; INCREASES THE VEHICLE PURCHASE TAX FROM 5% TO 6%.
